met with a bidshooter, yesterday to buy his comics. The items were great... no folds, tears, whatever. yun nga lang madilaw na yung paper and meron na brown spots. Just like the xmen3 i posted in bidshots. Sayang! ganda pa naman ng comics nya, so instead of having a near mind grading, we graded the items as fine. great guy by the way... very accomodating and ma-kwento Didnt buy the comics coz im looking for something that i could preserve as an investment. good thing we met somewhere near my office lang, kundi another "antipolo incident" hahahaha So anyway, we talked about things you could do in order to preserve the comics and how to prevent the yellowing. Told him that he should seal the comics properly and not to place them under direct sunlight. Im hoping you guys could add to this coz im still relatively an amature in terms comics preservation hehehe... Another thing... what type of boards do u use? sometimes when im really in a low budget, i just buy the thick folders from national bookstore, cut it and use it as backing boards. Pretty cheap than the ones bought in filbars... i only spend like 2.50 a piece. Is that alright? I mean, di ba masama sa comics yun? hahahaha! so, im serious, ok lang ba yun?

The problem with buying comics now is they don't give you plastic bags and backing boards anymore. Comic Odyssey na lang sa Robinson's Place Ermita ang gumagawa noon, dati talaga noong college pa ako, CATS, Filbars, ComicQuest (minsan) ginagawa ito, pero ngayon - wa na - you have to buy those pricey acid-free bags and boards... pero take note that the boards aren't so acid free too!
I usually put my super favorite collectibles in acid-free bags (or yeah - the ordinary bags provided by comic odyssey - tipid dapat) then place them in my box, then the box is placed in a closed cabinet on top of my bed. Pero weird pa rin, dahil some of the older comics - may konting yellow spotting na (especially the older Marvels and some of my MAXX from Image). And upon close observation, kahit itong mga boards - nagkakadilaw at brownish spots na rin in due time - I think you have to replace them at least once a year.
Pero know what? Some of my comics have a backing board na cut out from black and white illustration board - these boards are sturdy and up to now - di pa nagdedeteriorate (my favorite 92 comics have the luxury of this) - hay pero sa sobrang dami na ng comics ko, di ko na rin naaalagaan yung iba - so I'm just selling them cheap - although the quality is ranges from fine to good condition.

If you guys can get your hands on some packed silica gel then that's the best way you can preserve your comics. Pag me nahanap kayo, inform me rin ha? What it does is suck the moisture from its surrounding thereby preventing your comics from err... moisture (which does terrible things to your precious ones).

great going guys!!! galing ng mga methods nyo.... kailangan din kasi mag-improvise pag wala yung mga backing boards or bags na gusto natin.
for my part, I always use the acid free bags being sold by filbars... minsan filbars sells the ones that has their logo, hindi yon ang binibili ko kasi madali mapunit at hindi acid free. for the backing boards, I use bristol board na at least 6 ply... mas makapal mas maganda syempre basta bilhin nyo yung smooth may smooth surface.
i've also bought some comics from abroad using better boards kaso mahal pag binili ko online. baka gusto nyo makihati, sabihin nyo lang
Poppa Bear, hindi ba magiging bulky yung comics bag mo pag sinamahan mo ng silica gel yung comics... baka maging reason din ito para ma-damage yung comics. what do you think?
stay cool dudes!

You dont put it inside the acid free, you just place it outside. So if you got like comics stored in a box (and if you're a protect freak like me ;D the box is inside another container) you place the silica gel inside the box, on top or on the sides. Ang hirap maghanap nito kasi it's not readily available and others use it for illegal purposes other than preservation. I've tried looking for this stuff but the only two successes I've had were from two packages that was sent to me from Japan, me silica gel dun kaya swerte.
Drugstores sell them for a very high price.

Thanks for the Silica gel tip... may mga medicines dito and some food with those silica gel packs - magamit na nga! This will be great for my books (kasi nag-shift na ako sa pag-collect ng graphic arts/ design books like Art Of Atlantis, Art Of StarWars Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones.
For my super collection - medyo protect freak ako, they're the ones in the box with boards and everything and placed in a closed shelf - I'll try that Silica Gel!
